Momigami From Magazine Pages: How to Distress Magazine and Coffee Table Images PART TWO
(Actual paper folding starts at the 7.15 mark.)
Momigami is a traditional Japanese paper technique that turns paper into a gorgeous soft paper. Today we look at a way to turn ordinary magazine pages and glossy images from coffee table books into momigami papers that you can use in art journals and other mixed media techniques.
PLEASE NOTE: IT IS IMPORTANT TO COAT YOUR PAGES IF THEY ARE GOING IN A JOURNAL, OTHERWISE THE OIL MAY LEAK ONTO OTHER PAGES. Try acrylic gel medium, a coat or two of PVA/craft glue/Mod Podge, etc., and be sure and test before gluing into a new book. WHEW!
If you have any questions or feedback, or even ideas of ways to use momigami magazine pages in our work, please get in touch in the comments below.

Today's video is a mini-course in how to distress, degloss, and age magazine pages to use in your work - your art journals, junk journals, collage, altered books, and other mixed media projects. WRITE IT, BURN IT, LET IT GO Recently a study showed that writing down feelings of anger and then destroying the paper eliminated that anger. Today I talk about how using this age-old technique of committing our toxic thoughts to paper and then burning them can be a meaningful, cathartic act, yet another way that a journal can change your life. Five Lessons from a 60 Year Old Journal

Today I have a flip through of a very special travel diary. It is over 60 years old and belongs to my husband who made it when he was 21 years old and traveling from France to India. This was no fancy cruise or whatnot - he had almost no money and in my opinion even less sense as he and two friends crossed the deserts of Iran and Pakistan with a jalopy of a jeep and a can of water. He also had ...

    Thanks, Kelly for sharing Gabriel's diary of his amazing adventure! Twenty years ago, my husband and I had the opportunity to spend 6 months aboard a friend's 45 foot catamaran, and we sailed the Leeward Islands in the Caribbean. Our friend was a seasoned Captain, but we had no sailing experience. I kept a journal onboard, and it brings me great pleasure to pull it out and re-visit that adventure. I like the addition of other people's contributions in Gab's diary. Something I've not done before, but now plan to do, when keeping my now recurrent traveler's notebook on future trips. Cheers from NE Florida!

      Well hello there, Brenda. I keep illustrated travel diaries and notebooks like religion. And like your sailing journal, the way it captures memories is even more visceral and personal than a photography. Also, Gab is tickled that his 21 year-old self is having a day. 😺

    I printed off a papyrus manuscript page from the 1st century, straight onto high quality paper & used baby oil on my hands to create the most beautiful aged effect. But the effect from some of these gloss pages looks cool.

    I like to do stacked collages and these would look great peeking out from the lower layers. Also I think stitched onto a fabric scrap to make safety pin flags. So many possibilities.

      Ooh, I like the safety pin flag idea. Be sure and test the papers to make sure the oil doesn't cross contaminate. I haven't had any problems with layered collage but it is a good thing to be aware of it you are also using fabric or whatnot.

    Fascinating and very informative! Thank you for sharing. May I ask: 1) Will the olive oil turn rancid over time? If so, would mineral oil be a suitable substitute? 2) Will the oil (whatever kind) leach out if used for scrapbooking, art journals, etc? If so, would mod podge or similar sealer medium prevent that? Thank you

      Hi Jodie. I have no reason to think it will turn rancid but mineral oil would be a very reasonable thing to try instead. Lots of viewers have also said they like coconut oil. As for the oil leeching, be sure and test it out and make sure. You may be able to cure it with heat and time but I am adding a coat of gel medium for a seal. Play around and see what works! Kelly

    I’m going to try this to make backgrounds for Artist Trading cards. Have you tried using sandpaper on the gloss pages first like you did in your previous video? I’m thinking that if you broke the surface a bit the hand lotion might work. I might try it. It may though make more holes in the paper.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts 14 годин тому

      Hi Melissa. This is a good idea and I will try it later today. I'm afraid that holes are inevitable but you can always own it and integrate them into your cards for texture. Take care that the paper is "cured" so the oil doesn't leech into the card you attach it to. Try sealing with some pva or gel medium or other, or blotting, or heating - or just time.

      I would use it to giftwrap soap and everything else under the sun. 😺Take care the oil doesn't leech onto other papers or what you are wrapping. You can try "curing" the paper with heat and/or time, or adding a coat of medium or craft glue for a seal. Hope this helps!

    • @BookandPaperArts

      I use it from time to time but for my own work I prefer acrylic gel medium as it has more slip and lets me rearrange papers if needed before they dry permanently. When I do use PVA I add a smidgen of water to help me get that slip and less drag. Does that make sense?

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts 14 годин тому

      Erin, you can try using less oil. You only should be coating your fingertips with oil as you add it in each fold. You can also try folding without oil at all. It takes more kneading but eventually it will break down the fibres and give you a lovely, soft effect.

    Does the oil dissipate? I like what you showed us but I wonder if the oil will leach out when the paper is used. Would oil have been used traditionally? I think it could be a problem for the longevity and compatibility when using a mix of materials including water based paint.

    • @BookandPaperArts
      @BookandPaperArts День тому

      Lori, traditionally a plant based starch is used but it is not very effective with papers that have a glossy overcoat. Oil will leech out, at least at first - it should cure in time. I would try sealing it with a coat of gel medium or other PVA. It doesn't work great with water based paints but it might with acrylic. Happy making! Kelly

      Hi Paige, it was all new to me, too, until about two months ago. Isn't it great that there is still stuff out there to discover and learn? 😺

      Thanks bunches, Cathy. Also, other viewers are chiming in and coconut oil seems to be a winner while others recommend mineral oil. Happy making!
